How to Play Pokémon Z Fan Game on Android (JoiPlay Setup Guide)

Ever wondered what a true sequel to the Kalos region would look like? Pokémon Z is a massive, fan-made masterpiece developed by Eric Lostie that delivers the dark, expansive story of Kalos that we never officially got. Set 300 years before the events of X and Y, this game features an incredible original storyline, new regional forms, mega evolutions, and over 40 hours of gameplay.

While originally built for PC, you can play this entire game on your Android device using the JoiPlay emulator. Follow this quick, step-by-step guide to get it running flawlessly with zero lag.

Step 1: Extract the Game Files

Before installing any apps, you need to unpack the game data. Open your preferred Android file manager, navigate to your downloads, and locate the POKEMON Z V2.13.zip file. Select Extract here. Because the file is nearly 800 MB, give it a few moments to completely unpack all the audio and graphics folders.

Step 2: Install JoiPlay & the RPG Maker Plugin

Next, install the base JoiPlay APK. Once that is done, install the RPGMPlugin APK. This plugin is absolutely essential because Pokémon Z is built on the RPG Maker XP engine, and JoiPlay needs it to read the game data.

Step 3: Configure Permissions and Add the Game

Open JoiPlay and grant all requested permissions, ensuring you toggle Allow management of all files on. Inside the JoiPlay dashboard, tap the (+) plus icon in the top right corner and select Add Game. Choose the executable file by navigating into your extracted Pokémon Z folder, scrolling to the bottom, and selecting Game.exe. Name the game and finish the wizard.

Step 4: Fix the RTP Error & Optimize Settings

When you first launch the game, you will hit a prompt stating a Runtime Package (RTP) is required. Click download to grab the official RPG Maker XP RTP (.exe file) from your browser. Go back to JoiPlay, click choose on the prompt, and select that downloaded RTP file to extract it automatically.

For the best performance, head into JoiPlay's settings, scroll down to Ruffle Settings, and switch the Render Backend to Vulkan and set the Quality to Best to ensure a smooth, lag-free experience!
